The Enchanted Cave 2 MEGA UPDATE and price change

Today I’m thrilled to announce that The Enchanted Cave 2 is getting a major update on all platforms on May 2nd! This update I have appropriately named the “MEGA UPDATE.”

This update will set the game to version 3.0 and will add tons of new content.

Complete list of changes:

  • Added full controller support
  • Added 3 challenge game modes
  • Added 5 new heroes (one only in green goo’s quest)
  • Heroes now have unique starting stats
  • Added 2 new NPCs that can be helped
  • Added 7 new items (one only in monster’s lair)
  • Added 2 new monsters (both only in monster’s lair)
  • Added a new merchant
  • Added bonus infinity skill nodes to skill tree that are revealed when a full branch is completed
  • Added Import/Export feature to transfer save data between devices
  • Added monster descriptions to bestiary
  • Reduced MP use of attack magic from 8 to 7
  • Increased value of “magic” enchantments by 50%
  • Fixed bug where magic bonus with crafted potions had no effect
  • Small visual improvements to some UI elements.
  • Fixed some visual bugs with spritesheet edges on some objects
  • Fix when enchanting to have an item’s single current enchantment selected by default when adjusting enchantments.
  • Fixed a rare soft-lock that can happen when clicking anywhere immediately after death
  • Improved rain performance
  • Improved final boss intro performance
  • Fixed some lag issues
  • (Steam Version) Added 11 new achievements
  • (Steam Version) Fixed retroactive achievement checking

Challenges

The MEGA UPDATE features 3 new challenges, which each take the base game and adds their own twist on it as a shortened 50-floor adventure. Explore a dungeon crammed with a more varied and more numerous selection of monsters in the “Monster’s Lair,” or try out the cave as a maze with limited visibility in “The Labyrinth.”

If you’re looking for a radically different experience, you may love “Green Goo’s Quest,” in which a particularly courageous green goo from the first Enchanted Cave sets out to be a hero! You can only equip swords and helmets, with loot and enchantment stats adjusted for this.

There are 4 new heroes (5 including green goo), and every hero now has their own unique starting stats.

Full Controller Support

The largest addition as far as my own development time goes is the addition of full controller support for the desktop versions. It turns out there are quite a lot of clickable things in the game that had to each be considered to make everything easily accessible with a controller!

Import and Export save files to any other device

The Enchanted Cave 2 is now available on PC, Mac, Linux, Android, iOS, and even some html5 versions, but all platforms handle their actual save files differently. With the new Import/Export feature you can copy a text output of your slot’s save data, transfer it to another device you have the game installed on (emailing it to yourself works great), and paste it directly into the game on that new device to effectively transfer a save. This feature can also be used to copy save files on the same device, or make backups of your save slots.

Live Beta on Steam available now!

Every bit of content in the update is completed and is the beta stage of development (except for the artwork of one more hero which I plan to live stream the creation of during a Q&A on the update). If you own the game and want to test out the new content today and help me iron out any bugs I may have missed, check out the steam thread here!

Price Change

In the interest of full transparency, when the update goes live on May 2nd I will also be increasing the price of the desktop version from $4.99 to $9.99 as well as the mobile versions from $2.99 to $5.99. If you already own the game before May 2nd, you will not have to pay any extra for the update – it is a free update and is not paid DLC.

The reason for the price change is simply because I have felt that the game has always been very under-priced (which was my mistake) even before the new content. I’m confident that the quality and amount of content the game provides is well worth a $9.99 price tag with of course the occasional discount during sales.

The new content adds plenty of new features that I’ve either considered from the start and turned out too time costly to add (like controller support) or ideas that cropped up during the months or years following the release.  In addition, the update allows me to provide a significantly richer experience that further distances the premium version from the stripped down free flash demo.

Personal Note

It’s around 3 years after the release of the game and I’ve always been pleased with how the game turned out and it’s reception, but this update especially feels like a more complete conclusion to the development process. The Enchanted Cave 2 will now feature everything plus more that was originally envisioned, and at a fair price that will further support myself as I work on my next game. Thank you to everyone who is a fan of the game for your support, bug reports, suggestions, and sharing it with your friends, and an extra thank you to my original kickstarter backers who funded the development of the game because none of this would have happened without your generosity!

  1. Hello!

I’ve had the game for some time, and just saw the massive update on Steam – thank you so much for all the new wonderful content! I do have one problem though: my save files from previous runs have disappeared, and when I tried to create a new one just now, it also disappeared when I closed the game and opened it again. I’ve been trying to search on Google, but I couldn’t find anything beyond suggestions to verify the game files or enable Cloud, neither of which had worked. If you could help me, I would be grateful! And thank you again for making an addictive game!

      1. Thank you for getting back to me – I’m on PC! I’m currently making do with the Import/Export feature, and saving my games in Notepad every time before I close the game itself, then pasting from there into the game.

        1. That’s strange that the saves aren’t being kept.

On Windows your save files are the .sol files located at C:\Users\YOUR_USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\okshur\Enchanted Cave 2
(The AppData folder is hidden so you’ll have to show hidden files or just go to the full path)

Could you check if that folder is there and if there are any files in it? Maybe check it while you’re starting/playing/exiting the game to see if files appear then disappear at certain times. I’m thinking it may be a cloud sync issue with steam.

          1. I checked, and there are 5 files there, “TEC2GameData.sol” and four “TEC2Slot” files. When I open the game, they are still there. If it’s a cloud sync issue, here’s to hoping it will be resolved. The files are all from August 2017, by the way – not sure if that has anything to do with it, but since the update looks very extensive, I thought I’d mention it just to be safe.

            1. If they are all from August it would match what you’re describing… that nothing is being loaded OR saved. But those are definitely your old save files.

Since this is the only report I’ve heard of this I’m thinking it may be a permissions problem with the application or your computer somewhere? Maybe an antivirus or something that is stopping the game from reading or writing files.

If you look in the Roaming folder you may see other games you’ve played that use that folder to save data. Could you check one of those games to see if they are saving correctly and their save files are being updated?

              1. I found two games that use my Roaming folder (Rusty Lake Roots/Paradise), and both of those load just fine and have all my achievements. It might be a Windows problem on my end, yes, though I sadly don’t know enough of Windows to say what it might be. Thankfully your Import/Export feature is a life saver, so even though the games don’t load in, I have been keeping separate .txt files and I just load in whichever one I want to play.

Thank you so much for all your replies so far! You have given me countless hours of joy with this game on Kongregate and Steam, so even if it takes a little fiddling to play my saves, I’m enjoying the mega update immensely!

              2. Ok well I’m glad the import/export feature is working! I’m not done adding updates with a few more bug fixes so it’s possbile this could be fixed as a side effect of changing framework versions on my end that fixed an unrelated bug. Look for a version 3.1 update sometime in June.

            2. I’ve just published an update to version 3.11 on steam. There have been some issues with saves not saving on the mobile versions which is fixed with this update so it’s possible it may fix the problem for you as well if you’d like to check it out.

  2. How is it “full controller support” if you cannot move the character with the controller? Playing on Android.

        1. I’ve just published a new build on the Play store, version 3.09 that should take care of this. Let me know if it works for you!

  3. Hi,
I’ve been playing The Enchanted Cave 2 around 2 years ago, bought it on mobile. It was really fun, but there were a few issues that really… ruined my fun at NG+2 and 3. But I will pick this game up again when the update comes, I’m even considering buying it on Steam again. But, here are my issues:
So, at the end of NG+1, I hit the 500 defense barrier. That’s when my fun stopped. There is a bug in the game that just made defense over 500 do nothing. I began grinding Attack/Magic, and after a looong grind, I beat NG+2. But then, I realized what this would end up at. It would end in a “One-hit the enemy or die” scenario. That realization annihilated my fun, and made me drop this game. If this bug gets fixed, I’d play much further. Also, a slightly smaller xp curve would be good. I’m a completionist, and wanted to complete the skill tree. But that goal was also robbed from me as every level required ~50% more than the last. It entered the millions… and I couldn’t do that anymore. I was getting ~50k experience for completely clearing the highest ten floors I could access – and these took ~20 minutes each! I didn’t want to grind around 7h for three skill points. Maybe you could put in a skill gem, that gives you a skill point, or an xp gem that gives you ~5% for the next level (they shouldn’t be that common though).
    In summary:
If these two issues get solved, I’d be more than willing to play this game a lot again. With the new content, I’m really hyped. Keep that good work up!
